Totem Falls ES briefly evacuated as smoky smell triggers fire alarm | 911
It wasn't a drill for students at Totem Falls Elementary School on Monday afternoon, as they left the school building after the fire alarm was pulled.
It was pulled after a smoky smell was detected in a storage area near the school kitchen. While the cause of the smell wasn't determined, students were allowed back in once firefighters determined there was no threat to them.
In an email sent to many Totem Falls parents, principal Mike Cosgrove said the students did a "great job" in evacuating and waiting patiently until being given permission to go back inside.
Here's the email in full:
Dear Totem Falls Parents/ Guardians,
I would like to share some information regarding an incident that occurred at Totem Falls this afternoon. Just after third lunch, a strong burning smell was detected in the kitchen storage room. The fire alarm was activated and students and staff in the main school building and portables were evacuated to the playground.
After checking out the kitchen and gym area, fire department officials determined it was safe for students to return to their classrooms. School district officials are working to determine the cause of the odor. All of the students did an excellent job of evacuating the building and waiting patiently on the field for the all clear signal.
Safety of our students and staff is always our first priority. We know that accidents can happen and that’s why we practice for emergency evacuations. Please know that we will continue our careful and conscientious maintenance of safety for all who learn and work here.
Should you or your child have any questions or concerns regarding today’s incident, please don’t hesitate to call me at 360-563-4750.
Sincerely,Mike Cosgrove
Principal
