School board to discuss shortening school years tonight
Politics, Schools

Could the school years in the Snohomish School District become a little shorter?

The Snohomish School Board will be discussing a resolution asking the state for a waiver on the mandated 180-day school year at tonight's meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. at the SSD Resource Service Center on Avenue D. The waiver would be for the next three school years.

School districts that ask for waivers usually end up shortening the number of days in a year. For example, the Northshore School District (which serves Bothell, Kenmore and Woodinville) has had a waiver from the state for the last two school years to operate a 175-day year.

Also on the agenda tonight is a request to restart the design process on the proposed aquatic center on Maple Avenue.

The next school board meeting is set for January 25.
